U Springs

A U-shaped spring, also referred to as a V spring, meander spring, or cantilever spring, is curved into a U (or V) shape to produce a consistent radial or axial force. This type of spring is ideal for sealing components that require additional stability under pressure or continuous fluid movement.

U springs should not be mistaken for spring clips, which are generally C-shaped and rely on tension.

Materials

U springs are engineered to maintain an even pressure on seals, allowing for temperature variations that cause expansion or contraction. They are commonly manufactured from:

  • Stainless Steel: Recommended for U Springs that operate in a moist or corrosive environment. They resist rust and preserve their strength over time.
  • Carbon Steel: Chosen for applications that require maximum strength, carbon steel provides high tensile performance, ensuring U springs can endure heavy loads and forces.

Common Applications

U springs are most commonly used to secure seals in hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Their sealing force maintains pressure and prevents fluid leakage. Even minor leaks can diminish system efficiency or potentially lead to a mechanical failure.

U Spring Manufacturers

Unlike coil springs, which are designed to absorb shock primarily, U springs are built for consistency, keeping parts properly aligned and under stable pressure, which helps to minimise wear and tear. In cases of unique conditions, we can utilise special alloys to handle extreme temperatures or high pressures.
